CREATORS enables local initiators to create and operate advanced Community Energy Systems (CES) by supporting technical, financial, and social processes. This enables resilient and low-carbon energy systems that serve and engage the communities they support.
A collaborative project under the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 research programme
The final structure of the CREATORs project was agreed in July 2020 and the project is on-going to date. EnergyPro joined the project consortium offering our expertise in energy efficiency assessment protocol standardisation and de-risking, and our knowledge of CES structures and contractual arrangements.
EnergyPro is currently leading the development of following aspects of the project in order to ensure the project produces templates that are equitable and replicable:
Additionally, we will support Cordeel in the segmentation of the end-user groups (e.g. residential/commercial/industrial), identifying the needs and drivers that trigger each of them to participate in a local energy community. Finally, we will participate in the dissemination and exploitation activities in WP7 with the rest of the partners.
The services will deliver 60% preparation and operational costs reductions, ensuring 99,95% uptime, 20-35% CAPEX reduction, and up to 40% additional incomes.
With the sector moving beyond inventor-lead pilots, local CES initiators lack the capacity for high-quality simulation, business modelling and automated operations that are required in communities with a range of vectors, 1000s of mixed members, and balancing/ trading that requires controls in milliseconds.
We are:
And we codified a set of legal structures that enable the above relationships and revenue flows, as well as the desired form of community participation and benefits sharing.
The results show 5-10% local energy price reduction (below €0,18kWh) in systems covering all vectors, with 10³ – 104 participants. The approach creates 2 fte jobs in each CES, whilst for partners remote services could reach 10% the system turnover, in what is a high growth market. In standardising simulation and assessment tools in close collaboration with local stakeholders (30 LoS), the BRIDGE initiative and lenders (industry-lead Investor Confidence Protocols), CREATORS significantly advances commercial readiness.
