Distributed energy systems are locally installed equipment for energy generation and storage. Assets that produce energy for consumption on your side of the utility meter are referred to as behind-the-meter (BTM) assets. Energy assets that are connected directly to the transmission or distribution network are known as front-of-the-meter (FTM) assets. These are large scale energy assets utilised by the electricity grid for stabilisation.
